Chapter 1 The bustle and hustle of the midmorning market in Jorenth was at its usual dull roar. The birds had been scared form the trees by the cries of "Hot pies, 5p!" and "Fresh fish, fresh fish!" and "Finest silk from the orient, soft as lily petals and pale as the moon!" Amidst all this loud gaiety was Belula- a young lady of perhaps only twenty years of age, or younger still. She was unusually small- only four feet and some-odd inches, and her stomach-length curls had been coloured as blue as dark midnight, thanks to colour derived from oxidized powder of the indigo plant. Had she left the powder plain, her hair would have resembled the
